Brief History about IPS Alumni Association
The Institute of Professional Studies Alumni Association (IPSAA) was formed in October 1999. The formation was necessitated by the passage of the Institute of Professional Studies Act, 1999 (Act 566) which, among others, requires the Alumni Association to be represented on the Governing Council of the Institute. Subsequently, a nine-member Interim Executive Committee (IEC) was constituted, headed by Nana Baah-Abu Okai IV, who was mandated to represent the Alumni on the Governing Council. The IEC was also to steer the affairs of the Association, particularly to bring together past students and rekindle their spirit of partnering the Institute in its quest to develop the various facets of its structure. The IEC was to perform this duty until such a time that a substantive Executive Committee was put in place through proper elections.
In 2008 Professor Joshua Alabi, an alumnus and a lecturer at the Institute was elevated to the position of a Rector and recounting the efforts of the IEC, facilitated the establishment of an Alumni Desk within the Institute to re-organize the Association. The motivation to make the Association more formidable and vibrant was further boosted when Nana Kwaku Duah, an Alumnus of IPS, was enstooled as the King of the Ashanti Kingdom under the stool name; Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Within a spate of time, the Alumni Desk was able to reach out to various Alumni, notable among them; Mr. Francis Dadzie-Secretary General of the Advertisers’ Association of Ghana (AAG) and Mr. Kaleem Sulemana of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). Meetings were organized and a constitution was quickly drafted to pave way for elections which was held on 24th of April, 2010. A Seven-member National Executive Officers led by Mr. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, a Lecturer at the Institute, were elected to steer the Affairs of the Association.
IPSAA was formally inaugurated at the Coconut Groove Hotel on 26th August, 2010. The Inauguration attracted a number of prominent past students from all walks of life, including Honorable Kan-Dapaah, a Member of Parliament, Mr. Alexis Assuinura-Financial Controller of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Professor Joshua Alabi, Mr. Felix Gomashi-Financial Controller –International Conference Centre, and Mr. Kwabena Osei Sempremoo-Auditor of the GETFund.
In order to bring most of the senior colleagues on board, an interim Alumni Council led by Hon. Kan-Dapaah was constituted to serve in an advisory capacity. Management of the Institute complemented the effort of the newly elected Executive Officers by donating an office space to the Alumni Association. Currently, over one thousand eight hundred (1,800) past students have been registered as members of IPSAA.
Today IPSAA, which has as its motto “supporting the vision”, is challenged to partner Management in its quest to bring radical transformation to the Institute.
