The University of Professional Studies, Accra Alumni Association was established as the Institute of Professional Studies Alumni Association (IPSAA) in October 1999. The formation was necessitated by the passage of the Institute of Professional Studies Act, 1999 (Act 566) which required a representation on the governing council of the Institute by the Alumni. Subsequently, a nine-member Interim Executive Committee (IEC) Headed by Nana Baah-Abu Okai IV was mandated to represent the Alumni on the Governing Council of the then Institute. The IEC was also to steer the affairs of the association until a substantive Executive Committee was put in place through proper elections.
The motivation to make the association more formidable and vibrant was further boosted when Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II known in private life as Nana Kwaku Duah, also an Alumnus of IPS, was enstooled as the King of the Ashanti Kingdom. The main objective of the IEO was to bring together past students and rekindle their spirit of partnering the University in its quest to develop the various facets of its structure. This quest was charted by the IEC until 2008 when Professor Joshua Alabi, an alumnus and a Faculty Member at the University was elevated to the position of a Rector. Recounting the efforts of the IEC, Professor Joshua Alabi subsequently facilitated the creation of an Alumni Desk within the University to re-organize the Association.
Within a spate of time, the Alumni Desk was able to reach out to various Alumni members. Notable among them were Mr. Francis Dadzie, Secretary General of the Advertisers Association of Ghana (AAG), Mr. Kaleem Sulemana Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and Mr. Fred Awah (Alumni Desk Officer). Meetings were organized and a constitution was drafted and an election was subsequently held on 24th of April, 2010. A seven-member National Executive officers led by Mr. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Lecturer, were elected to steer the Affairs of the Association.
IPSAA was formally inaugurated at the Coconut Groove Hotel on 26th August, 2010. The Inauguration attracted a number of prominent past students from all walks of life, notable among them were Honourable Kan-Dapaah, Member of Parliament, Mr. Alexis Asuinura, Financial Controller of GETFund, Professor Joshua Alabi, Mr. Felix Gomashi-Financial Controller (ICC), Mr. Kwabena Osei Sempremoo-Auditor (GETFund) et al.
In order to bring most of our senior colleagues on board, an interim Alumni Council led by Hon. Kan-Dapaah was constituted to serve in an advisory capacity.
Management complemented the effort of the newly elected Executive Officers, by donating an office space to the Alumni Association. Currently, over three thousand (3000) have been registered as members of UPSAA.
Today, the Alumni with its motto “Supporting the Vision” is challenged to partner management in its quest to bring radical transformation to the University.
