PBBA 301 Introduction to Risk management and Insurance
The aim of this course is to instill knowledge and key skills in managing risk in both the strategic and functional contexts. The course includes the nature of business risks, risk management administration and control, corporate liability and insurance and the insurance market, risk information management, methods and techniques of risk management.
PBBA 302 Management Accounting
This course provides understanding and the application of management accounting techniques for the interpretation of management information. Topics include budget planning and management responsibilities, preparation and presentation of management accounting information for decision making, decision making process and planning.
PBBA 303 Human Resource Management 1
A study of the behavior of various members of organizations including topics such as: the individual- the emotional side of man, the psychology of success and failure, the sociology and meaning of work, attitudes and attitude changes; the group-group pressures on the individual, group dynamics and the individual opinions and social pressure, conformity and character, group effectiveness; organizations, structure and problems of modern formal organizations, human aspects of formal organizations; communications and influence–leadership styles and performance; society, the worker and work environment–tribal, religious, gender, nationality, minority, ideological, groupings; social status of occupations.
PBBA 304 Strategic and Operational Management
The aim of this course is to equip the aspiring Administrator with both the strategic and operational contexts of his role. It includes the nature of strategy and strategic role; the corporate environment and systems theory, the management of change, culture and Management of performance, Motivation and leadership.
PBBA 305 Financial Accounting
Further considerations of the preparation of financial statements; incomplete records of businesses and non- profit making organizations; specialized transactions including bills of exchange, consignments, and joint ventures; introduction to analysis and interpretation of financial statements
PBBA 306 Company and Partnership Law
The course is to provide students with the understanding and insight into issues of company law, which is to enable students, appreciate the legal issues involved in the administration of companies. The course content will consider issues arising from law of contract – formation, enforceability, validity, discharge and remedies. Aspect of commercial law, law of agency, negligence and their relevance to governance will also be treated.
PBBA 307 Management Principles and Practices
This course is intended to assist students in acquiring knowledge and developing cognitive processes necessary to make decisions in the practice of management. It will teach the traditional foundations of management while developing decision making skills to apply this knowledge in a real world setting. It will consider topics such as the concept and nature of management; the historical bases for management; management and society; leadership and decision making; organizational development and transformation; ethics and social responsibility, etc. it will also consider the managerial style and management of selected Ghanaian enterprises.
PBBA 308 Management Information Systems
The course provides students with a broad but critical introduction to the understanding of management information needs, medium of information transfer and storage, information as a resource, the characteristics of the Information age, and information systems. The course will provide analysis in data and knowledge as corporate resources, data processing, systems theory, systems environment, the nature of organizations and organizational communications, data bases and systems design as well as decision-making and the character of managerial work in organizations.
PBBA 309 Marketing Management
The primary objective of this course is to further sharpen the students’ understanding of basic marketing concepts, tools and techniques and apply them in the analysis of marketing problems and development of marketing programmes from the perspective of a marketing manger. The course uses an analytical approach and is offered with a managerial orientation of decision-making. Consequently, the case method is the primary pedagogical tool supplemented by projects, exercises, and lectures. Topics covered include analysis of the marketing environment, buyer behavior, competition, availability of marketing strategies, planning individual components of planning individual components of the marketing mix and their integration into and effective marketing programme. Issues of implementing, evaluating and controlling the marketing programme are also addressed.
PBBA 310 Entrepreneurship Development
This course deals with both the theoretical as well as practical aspects of entrepreneurship. The course considers the role of entrepreneurship in economic development; the entrepreneur process; the determinants of societal entrepreneurship; contemporary issues in entrepreneurship studies Characteristics that influence the success/failure of entrepreneurial development will be discussed. In addition, the course will also examine how to develop entrepreneurial culture in organizations in order to facilitate innovation, creativity and form growth. Through participation in the course, the students are expected not only to become well read on the subject, but also to get involved in some practical aspects of entrepreneurship through various class assignments, projects, and case studies.
PBBA 311 Managerial Economics
This course covers the scope and nature of Managerial Economics–the applications of economic concepts as tools for problem solving and decision-making under conditions of uncertainty and risk. Topics to be covered include optimization: principles and techniques, total average and marginal relationships. Theory of Demand; demand function; price income, and cross elasticity; techniques of demand estimation. Production Theory: production functions; returns to scale, Cost Theory: cost functions; short run cost curves; long run cost curves, break-even analysis; profit contribution analysis, empirical cost analysis. Market Structures; pure competition and imperfect competition. Pricing practices. Linear programming: capital budgeting. The case method will be used throughout this course.
PBBA 312 Research Methods
Research strategies; problem identification formulation of hypothesis, research design, sources and uses of Secondary data; questionnaire and interview programming; collection of data; organization and processing of data; graphical and diagrammatic presentation; report writing; bibliography.
PBBA 313 Company & Partnership Law
This course aims at increasing students’ knowledge in legal matter pertaining to business set up and operations. It is thus a build up on Business Law (PBAD 211) and Company Law (PBAD 306). It will look at the formation of a business on partnership basis, the rights, responsibilities and obligations of the partners to themselves and to the business.
