PBBS 201 Quantitative Methods
Application of mathematics in business and economics, for examples: exponential functions in growth theory: linear, quadratic and logarithmic functions in demand, supply, cost and revenue analysis; differentiation and integration in production revenue and indifference curve analysis; difference and differential equations in cobweb theorem, demand and supply models; metric algebra as aid to solving demand, supply and cost functions in linear and quadratic equations.
PBBS 202 Philosophy and Logic
This course is meant to expose students to group and social dynamics so as to help them deal effectively with colleagues in the workplace and in the working environment in general. It is also intended to help students think clearly, read carefully, speak effectively and argue convincingly. PBBS 203 Principles of Accounting
An introduction to accounting principles, concepts and conventions; basic accrual accounting methods: the recording of transactions using double-entry principle; trial balance; adjustments; and the preparation of simple financial statements.
PBBS 204 Introduction to Computer Technology
This course will introduce students to computer applications and their uses in management. The course will cover Information Technology and Communication (ICT). It is to enable students understand the role of computers in information resource management and database management. Emphasis will placed on the use of the Internet and E-Commerce in global marketing operations. It will cover topics like World Wide Web (www) and Web Browsers, Internet software for business, on-line banking, censorship, data and information security and intellectual property rights. PBBS 205 Modern English Usage
This is a course intended to give opportunity to cultivate the art of creative writing. It is essentially a practical course hence the approach should be through individual work and performance and group discussions of individual writings
PBBS 206 Economy of Ghana
The course will examine the development of the Ghanaian economy in the pre and post independence period. It is designed to cover all and macroeconomic developments in Ghana as national income/output, inflation, unemployment, etc. as well as such developmental issues as industrialization, agriculture, and development programmes.
PBBS 207 Total Quality Management
The course seeks to introduce students to the importance of TQM and the need for continuous improvement in quality of all processes, products and services of an organization. It emphasizes the understanding of variation, the operational environment, the importance of the customer, and the involvement of all employees of an organization in pursuit of improvement. It also aims to provide students with knowledge of quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement through the use of tools and techniques of TQM, the skills relevant to applying the principles and practices of TQM in industrial, service, and government settings. It also offers a theoretical and practical understanding of how industries can use quality to enhance their international competitiveness, an ability to analyze difficult industrial problems and apply teams.
Topics include – Historical perspectives, Fundamental Concepts of TQM, understanding quality, quality improvement, Technical Tools and techniques of TQM and Implementing TQM.
PBBS 208 Business Communication II
A study of communication methods in organization including: nature and purpose of business communication, functions and skills of an effective communicator, features of effective communication, business correspondence, job application and personal data, speech making, report writing, taking of minutes.
PBBS 210 Business French
Proficiency in the use of French language in business communication. This course will focus on effective communication in French for business. It will require the application of language skills studied at the Level 100.
PBBS 220 Environmental Management
Students would be introduced to environmental science with the aim of having a fair knowledge on the nature of the environment, its degradation and the impact on business management. The course provides the student with basic understanding of the environment, environmental pollution within the context of the business environment. It takes into consideration the definition of the environment, importance of the environment in which the firm operates, environmental degradation – industrial pollution, waste management, air quality and its management.
It discusses the purpose of environmental policy, the role of environmental economics in policy decision and the policy instruments available to environmental regulators. Current statues affecting waste disposal, air quality and water quality would be discussed. It would also take into consideration environmental issues faced by Industry. Health and safety standards in a working environment are also considered as well as the design for environmentally conscious manufacturing and ISO 14,000.
PBBS 211 Business Law
This course is an introduction to the elements of legal reasoning. It seeks to impart an understanding of the law by engaging the student in a study of the fundamental principles of contract; company law, sale of goods and tort law. Equipped with this basic legal knowledge, students will become more aware of the ways by which legal problems might arise, and hopefully, be able to make better-informed judgments as to the circumstances under which they should seek legal opinion for guidance in the course of their future business transactions. Broadly speaking, the course will cover:
The Contract Law: general principles relating to the formation of contracts, validity and enforceability of contracts, vitiation factors, discharge of a contract and remedies for breach of contract.
The law of tort: deals with intentional torts, trespass to the person, land chattels or goods, the law of negligence. Commercial Law and Law of Agency: Company Law involving issues of the legal personality of a company and its implications, organs of a company and the responsibilities and duties expected of those organs.
PBBS 212 Understanding Customer Dynamics
This course provides an overview of consumer behaviour theories, research, and applications. It is designed to develop knowledge and skills that will facilitate an understanding of buyer behavior which can be integrated into the formulation of marketing strategies. This will be accomplished by surveying the social science underpinnings of consumer behavior as well as various types of consumer research, which may be valuable for specific marketing decisions. The course thus emphasizes the content and logical application of theories and research in analyzing consumer behavior for solving marketing management problems.
PBBS 213 Fundamentals of Marketing
Historical development of marketing; importance and functions of marketing; types of markets and classification of goods; the marketing concept; marketing systems- synergism and its relationship with marketing system; the marketing mix, market aggregation and market segmentation; marketing communications.
PBMK 214: Principles of Economics (Macro)
This course is designed to cover the basic concepts, principles and theories of macroeconomics, necessary for understanding the macroeconomic environment in which business units operate. Topics to be treated include basic distinction between Classical and Keynesian macroeconomics, national income accounting, determination of equilibrium national income and the multiplier concept. Other topics include the IS-LM model, aggregate demand (AD) and aggregate supply (AS) analyses, as well as the effects of the associated fiscal and monetary policies. |
